20 TIPS ON WHAT MAKES A GREAT DUCK RESCUE

  1. That waterbirds are moved off wetlands prior to the commencement of shooting, by light aircraft and on opening morning by rescuers blowing whistles and making lots of noise.

  2. That Dave Evans wakes everyone up in time!

  3. The inspirational bravery, dedication and enthusiasm of rescuers.

  4. That all rescuers wear white. To help ensure the safety of rescuers, it¹s important that shooters can easily see you. Also by wearing white, or bright colors, birds can see you and will stay out of shotgun range.

  5. The presence of the mobile vet clinic, veterinarians and wildlife carers.

  6. Action photos by rescuers of shooters behaving illegally

  7. Everyone staying cool and thinking through situations as they arise.

  8. Rescuers remaining calm under pressure when witnessing the brutality inflicted on our beautiful native birds by shooters.

  9. Ignoring shooters rude, abusive and aggressive comments

  10. That rescuers never forget the wetlands are a dangerous place to be. (A shotgun can kill at close range. The range of a shotgun is about 50 metres, however, the shotgun can still seriously wound or kill at the end of that range. Never take unnecessary risks. Never deliberately provoke shooters with aggressive comments.)

  11. Rescuers can calmly engage shooters in discussion to distract them from shooting birds

  12. Remember that the police presence on the wetlands makes it safer for rescuers.

  13. Rescuers avoiding fines by outmaneuvering the police and Wildlife Officers.

  14. Rescuers dealing courteously and sensibly with the media and not interrupt when the media interviews shooters.

  15. The continuing trend of very few shooters out on the wetlands

  16. And few dead or injured birds compared to what it used to be like.

  17. The camaraderie of the rescue team

  18. The excellent grub provided on-shore

  19. A portable toilet

  20. And the final objective lots of media good coverage .
