Kylie’s Vegan Corner
Don’t Call Us Vegan – It’s Too Political!!!!

by Kylie Dubrich

Apparently to label things vegan is way too political for a café in Richmond! Now the shop in question, which I might add has the word “Tofu” in it’s title (which ok call me crazy but implies that they are pretty vego/vegan friendly) I went into the other day…..was just after a yummy cake item or muffin, just in the mood – was near there & thought that would be perfect, surely I would find something there!!!!

Well the girl that served me was nice, quite helpful, I asked which of the cakes were vegan, she really didn’t know so asked someone (a guy who I presumed was the boss) & well this is when things got really with the crazy!

The conversation that took place was something like the following (don’t quote me word for word as I was quite surprised & taken aback by it all really):

Tofu Man "We don't do vegan at all'

Me "Ok so nothing vegan?

TM "Well there are no eggs or dairy or animal in these.."(pointing to some of the cakes)

Me "So then they are vegan'

TM "No"

Me "ok....but you just said they don't have any animal ingredients in them??"

TM "Ahh well I won't say anything is vegan, people then tell people & then they think we are a vegan shop & that is way too political!"

Me "okkkkkkkkkkk......sure – I was just after some vegan cake dude" (as I back out of the shop looking at him like the crazy he is!

What the hell.....too political to have vegan products that you actually call vegan!

Well that’s just completely messed up! I will not go back in there, refuse to........my head hurt walking away trying to process his take on this.....strange, strange little man!!!!!! Why on Earth would you have a shop like that & not want to promote vegan along with vegetarian products, especially when there is a shortage of places to get vegan treats! We are trying to get more labelling in this country so that it does show ‘vegan’ labelled on products, other countries already have this & do not have an issue with stating it…..I would have thought this is a progressive way to promote food these days, especially if you are a non meat establishment in the first place!

I was at a complete loss….I have never really encountered anything like this before & really hope not to again from a predominately vegetarian place. I am all for labelling foods better & promoting veganism & from a consumers point of view I want that for my purchases, from a manufacturers & business owners perspective…. well doesn’t that just widen their market instead of diminishing it?
After taking that all in, I decided to try a place down the Road…well they do some lovely vegan food there & are happy to label it as such…however we ran into an ‘issue’, I ordered a vegan cake but, then saw they had biscuits labelled vegan on the counter but had honey as one of the ingredients...so I questioned it.....well talk about prickly, the girl said 'I used to be vegan & ate honey, I don't have a problem with it!'

Fine - eat whatever the hell you want but don't call yourself a vegan or say a product is vegan when it clearly is not!!!! Last time I checked honey comes from a bee...makes it an animal ingredient...therefore not bloody VEGAN!!!!! She did however see my point & was nice about it all - perhaps just to shut me up I expect. People honey comes from a bee, say it with me…….it’s NOT vegan!!!!!!!!!!!!

This aside, I will still shop at Macro as they have some great ‘real’ vegan products in their supermarket section!

The whole definition has to be accurate, if you eat fish, then you are not a vegetarian, you are a pescitarian…..if you eat honey, then you are not a vegan, you may have a mainly vegan diet..but are not a vegan!

My problem with this is that when I go somewhere for a vegan meal, I want it to be vegan, I don’t want a chef to say, ‘but my friend is vegan & she eats honey or cheese…’

I want my vegan meal to be vegan, no animal products or bi products at all! The general public are not fully educated on the do’s & don’ts of veganism…..so if we have all this confusion thrown at them – they’ll never get it! Let’s be consistent people – please. I am happy for people to be vegetarian, cutting out things, that’s great. For me though, I am a vegan, that is what I choose & I choose it out of ethical reasons therefore do not want my beliefs compromised when I eat out because someone has their own definition of what a vegan is…..no animal products or bi-products at all…ok!!!!!

Ok, have had my rant now….sorry needed it, it’s one of those things that bugs me & needed airing, especially after this whole ‘I just wanted some cake’ experience!

People take their own steps into veganism, hell I was vego before discovering what vegan was…. it is a process & I don’t expect everyone to become vegan or vegetarian (though I would wet my pants with happiness if they would) but I do ask for consistency in your definitions people!!! Please, for the rest of us who are trying to promote & educate on veganism!

This brings me to my next article…..can people be ethical in business, I have experienced the first above business not wanting to promote veganism, I presume they believe it will harm their business or reputation somehow, so how do you survive in this world with an ethical company…. off I go to find out!!!

Ethics and making a buck!

Ok so we all get up everyday and go off to work…but how many of us are going off and doing a job that completely messes with our ethics?

And if we are lucky (or silly enough) to have our own business, where we can have our visions and produce the products and services that we want, surely this is where we can make our ethical stance. So how far do we take that? Do we only take it as far as the money line……

This is a subject that interests me & makes me curious about human nature… can people with ethics be good business people or is there way too much compromise needed in the business world that our ethics get put aside no matter how well our intentions are at the beginning? Can we maintain successful businesses and retain our ethics and be true to our visions?

I went in search of profitable companies that have maintained their ethics & I found De Lorenzo & Vegan Perfection in my endeavors.

De Lorenzo hair and cosmetic research was founded by Vincent and Anton de Lorenzo and is a totally Australian owned company.

De Lorenzo works in harmony with nature. Products are formulated using certified organics, natural plant botanicals, herbs, fruit extracts, vitamins, vegetable extracts and natural plant oils.

De Lorenzo does not test their products on animals and supports national campaigning against cruelty to animals. Their products do not contain ingredients of any animal origin, including: lanolin, beeswax, honey, silk or animal derived proteins.

They strongly support efforts to reduce ecological pollution and their homecare products do not contain any direct petrochemicals.
De Lorenzo’s quality endorsed manufacturing standards are internationally recognised.

I spoke with Vincent de Lorenzo – chairman and founder of De Lorenzo haircare:

KD: Your company has grown a lot over the years & I see your products everywhere these days, how have you managed to keep ethical in this cut throat ‘monied’ world?

Vincent de Lorenzo: It is the way I have always lived my life. If you believe in something that has always been part of your life and what you do on a daily basis then it is so easy to convey the philosophy of your product to others.

KD: Would you hope that more companies take your stance on the animal cruelty issue in regards to ingredients and testing?

Vincent de Lorenzo: Of course we would love this to take place – it would make for a better world. The biggest problem however is many companies may be not prepared to spare the extra expense that it takes to substitute ingredients that do not have any animal origin or are naturally derived. They may choose man made alternatives which tend to be less of an investment.

KD: Were your intentions always to have no animal ingredients & only use natural ingredients?

Vincent de Lorenzo: As mentioned I have always been very conscious of my health from a very early age. But you ask was it always my intentions? – No not always, I became aware of the extra health benefits of natural alternatives around 35 years ago. During this time I also became a member of the Cruelty to animals society. So when it came to developing the DE LORENZO brand, these beliefs were incorporated into our company philosophy from day one.

KD: Have you ever felt that people won’t buy your products because they don’t have animal ingredients or are tested?

Vincent de Lorenzo: No I never thought that way, but I did think that people wouldn’t understand why I decided to implement these beliefs. It has taken a long time to get across my message and it’s importance. I think now days it’s becoming more and more understood. Slowly, slowly, drip-by-drip the public are getting the message.

KD : In the USA & the UK they are very good with labeling products as vegan, would you consider putting “vegan” on your labeling at some point?

Vincent de Lorenzo: Yes people are far more aware of exactly what a vegan is, so yes it would be well worthwhile.

KD: Has their been an increase in the salons using your products because they are vegan? (Apart from being great products that is)

Vincent de Lorenzo: Well yes in some cases, But firstly the customer has to like our products. If you gave a choice to the customer of a natural plant based product versus a petrochemical based the customer usually chooses the plant based every time.

KD : Why do you think some businesses or companies are so scared to produce & market vegan products?

Vincent de Lorenzo: Cost and profits. Also they believe the cosmetic benefits are compromised, and this is not true. Natural is best.

KD: Would there ever been a point where you feel you would have to compromise the ethics of your company and change your products to suit the market out there? And if so what would push you to do that?

Vincent de Lorenzo: No – we are a family company and our beliefs will always remain true to our original philosophy set from the beginning.

KD: What are your plans for the future of De Lorenzo?

Vincent de Lorenzo: We have plans in the future to export DE LORENZO into other countries (Asia, Europe and eventually the US)

KD : Your products are fantastic & I am delighted to find such a high quality product that is vegan. (Review to follow this) so thank you for giving us an excellent quality product from a business that is also doing well in the business world and is ethical. & a huge thanks to Laura Perugini for all of her help setting up this interview!!!!

The next ethical business I came across was Vegan Perfection! Vegan Perfection is 2 committed vegans, environmentalists and humanitarians, Jeremy & Rebecca, who one day decided that they wanted to spread the beliefs of a vegan lifestyle to the Australian population by introducing innovative and superior quality vegan products to the market. Having lived for years in the U.K., where there are 250,000 vegans and an estimated 6 million vegetarians, they thought that the natural thing to do was to import some of the exciting vegan brands that they used to enjoy here for us to enjoy!

Vegan Perfection stocks a wide range of fantastic products (review of some of these goodies in this edition too)

I spoke with Jeremy from Vegan Perfection :

KD: Your company is fairly new, what was your inspiration to start all of this?

JJ : Our inspiration was born out of the fact that, as strict vegans, my partner and I were disappointed with the options available to us in Australia. Not so much the range of vegan products available, (although that is not great either), but a genuine lack of high quality products produced by ethical businesses. We do not want to support, financially or otherwise, companies that seek to cash in on a ‘niche’ market such as veganism. To us, being vegan is not a niche – it is our mainstream. So we support and promote solely vegan products that come from solely vegan companies that meet certain ethical criteria that we set out before we started. Besides this, I do not necessarily believe that foods produced by companies that also produce non-vegan products are really vegan!

KD: How do you plan to keep to your ethical beliefs in this cut throat ‘monied’ world?

JJ: Unfortunately, current society is absolutely obsessed with money. But just because things are so competitive and cut-throat does not mean that ethical business cannot flourish. Such businesses simply need the support of those with similar or identical ethical and moral codes. That and truly great products. We believe that we have those, so that is a solid footing for our success.

Our ethical beliefs are what they are. They were the same before we started this venture as they are now and will remain the same for the rest of our lives. Sure, people change and evolve, but our core beliefs and ethics, those of compassion, love and equality, will never change.

KD: Have you ever worried that you won’t make a living out of this as some people seem scared of the whole ‘vegan’ tag?

JJ: I would be lying if I said that at times I don’t worry about the financial success or failure of our business. We need to make a living in order to pay our way. But this is about so much more than simply making a living. We set out to achieve many things when we decided to attempt this project. As well as improving the situation for vegans in Australia, we also seek to introduce positive aspects of a vegan lifestyle to people who would otherwise know nothing about veganism. By importing the very best vegan products we know, virtually all of which are superior in quality to their non-vegan counterparts, we aim to promote veganism in a positive light, as opposed to the ‘tag’ that it currently seems to carry in mainstream society.

So, even if we cannot make a living out of this business, but we do achieve some or all of these other objectives, then the thousands of hours of work required to get this off the ground will have been worth it!

KD: Why do you think it is that some businesses or companies are so scared to produce & market vegan products? & what can be done to make them less afraid?

JJ: Quite simply because there is not enough money in it. The be all and end all for most companies is sales and profit. In order to shrug off their fears about producing and marketing vegan products, they would have to feel that there is a real push or trend toward veganism and its associated products. Similar to the way the manufacture of gluten-free products has taken off in the last couple of years.
There are already a significant number of companies out there that are producing quality vegan products for the right reasons. Our job is to seek them out and promote/support their products. It is a way of ‘backing up’ our beliefs, if you like.

KD: Would there ever been a point where you feel you would have to compromise the ethics of your company and change your products to suit the market out there? And if so what would push you to do that?

JJ: No, there would never be a point where we would compromise the ethics of our business – if it cannot function without ethical compromise, then it simply will not function. There are more than enough exploitative companies/businesses out there without us adding to the mix!

Our products are selected to suit a market that wants top-notch ethical products and supports businesses that promote a fair and compassionate world.

KD: Are you hoping to get the products into more shops around Australia?

JJ: It would be superb if we could get our range out to every corner of Australia, but that is proving very difficult. We will continue to try to get our products into all markets, so that people all around the country can access them. For those that do not have stockists nearby, or who cannot get to the shops for one reason or another, we offer a mail-order service to most parts of Oz. It is always nice to infiltrate mainstream markets – putting great vegan products out there to show people what vegans can enjoy on a daily basis!

KD: In the USA & the UK they are very good with labeling products as vegan, do you believe we need to start doing that in this country?

JJ: I am not sure about the US, but in the UK labelling for vegetarians and vegans is very good. Most retailers and manufacturers recognise that there is a significant vegan population, and have taken the step of labelling suitable items. I would love to see more Australian businesses do this – although generally I still find myself scanning ingredients lists, despite the labels. Force of habit, I suppose. It is a great feeling to shop and have that confidence that you do not have to scan ingredients or worry about the provenance of a particular ingredient or additive. A much more relaxing shopping experience!

There are a growing number of Australian manufacturers who are starting to label vegan products, but there is plenty of room for improvement!

KD : What are your plans for the future of Vegan Perfection? Will you be extending the range?

JJ: We are constantly on the lookout for new and exciting vegan products. We aim to extend our range as much as our ethical policies will allow. It is a difficult process, given the research that we do into products and manufacturers – and that is only once we have identified a product that is up to scratch quality wise.

KD: It must feel great to get up in the mornings, go to work & know you are 100% ethically doing what you believe in…how good is that?

JJ : It is a great feeling knowing that we conduct every aspect of our business according to our own principles! It definitely helps to remember this when people let you down or when things get tough. We have had a very rocky start to our business, but the belief in what we are doing has kept us going (along with the support of many great people). If we did not have that belief, then I think we would have given up long ago.

KD: Your products are fantastic & I am so happy to find products that are vegan & of such a high quality – especially the Cheezly & Booja-Booja Truffles. (Review to follow this) so thank you for providing us with excellent quality products from business people that have ethics!!! You guys rock!!!!

JJ: Thanks! It’s been a pleasure. We hope that more vegans out there enjoy them, too!

KD: Well it seems that some companies are not afraid to do the right thing & stand up & be counted as ethical…both of these businesses are highly ethical, doing well for themselves & providing us with great products, so please support them people!

Thanks! If any of you out there have an ethical business or know of one please let us know as it would be great to get a list going on the abolitionist for them!!!!

Review of Vegan Perfection’s Goodies

Ok…….well I have just been hand delivered a box of goodies to review by Jeremy & I am so excited!!! Ok I am here at work & in need of a pick me up this afternoon, so I decided not to wait till I get home to try some of these goodies!

Well a way to my heart is definitely with nice chocolate & bingo we have a winner, I just tried the Booja-Booja Hazelnut Crunch Truffles…..oh my goddess, these are divine! I didn’t think that anything could beat Turtle Mountain ice cream (peanut butter zig zag) but I think we have a contender here!!!!! Ok so not only do they melt in your mouth but there is a bit of a crunchiness to them too…perfect! They come in a nice little pack & would be great for a pressie for a chocolate lover!!!! The small box retails at $13 and the large at $19. Other goodies in the Booja-Booja range are: Organic French Champagne Truffles, Organic Around Midnight Espresso Truffles, Organic Ginger Wine Truffles, Organic Cognac Flambeed Banana Truffles or the Gourmet Selection Box. These truffles are all certified organic, vegan, handmade, gluten & wheat free!!

I am yet to try these but have a need to order some of the Organic French Champagne Truffles…how decedent……or the Around Midnight Espresso ones ahhhh I can’t decide, I may have to order both!!!! But these are sooooo good!!!!

Ok along with these I also tried the Plamil Organic Cayenne Chocolate…..woooooo ok that cayenne really hits in the chewing process…gave my boss a piece to try & he was impressed! Now I like this, not nearly as much as the Booja-Booja truffles but it was the kind of chocolate you could have with coffee after a nice meal. I am planning to try it out in a hot chocolate, this is where I think it will excel! Mmm maybe even fondue……mmmmm the possibilities! The Cayenne Chocolate sells for $6.50.

Ok I waited till I got home last night to try any more products out. First off we had the Redwood Thai Fish Style Cakes – yum! These are ‘bite size’ spicy patties made with chickpeas, onions & potato, flavoured with lemongrass, galangal & lime. Well these were some tasty bites. I tried one on it’s own then combined some in a sandwich with the Plamil Organic Egg Free Mayonnaise Original (see further down for more on this) & some salad. Wow this one was of the best sandwiches ever! I could imagine serving these Thai Fish Style Cakes at a party with a dipping sauce, they’d be ideal for that! But I’d probably get them just for sandwiches or wraps– they were awesome! A packet is priced at $8.95

The Lincolnshire Style Sausages were next on my gourmet list. We just pan fried these & had sandwich style also….yummo….these were great & I could imagine them for dinner with mashed potato & gravy…..they were not stodgy like a lot of veg sausages can be, they were tasty & filling with a great texture about them.
They also have Frankfurter Style Sausages, Curry Sausages, Gyros Style Sausages, Sage & Marjoram Sausages in the range. They range from $7.50 - $7.95

Neither of the 2 above products contain any hydrogenated fats or artificial colours or preservatives. & they are able to be frozen – so stock up!!!!!!!!!!!

Plamil Organic Egg Free Mayonnaise Original.. yum – as I said before, great on a sandwich. This mayo is smooth, I mean really smooth, velvety & way tasty! Great with potato wedges or for a potato salad…..ooooo, it’s priced at $7.50

Organic Chocolate Spread Hazelnut $8.95, was next on the list. I tried this just on some toast. It was kind of like how I remember nuttella tasting…but that was a very long time ago!!! It was not too chocolatey & had a nice nutty texture. Not really my thing but if you like the choc nut spreads this one is a good one! Other flavours are: Organic Chocolate Spread Original & Organic Chocolate Spread Orange.

Ok the next morning my breakie was a bagel….now my poor bagel was looking naked (bare cupboards as I am moving)…then I remembered that I had the Super Melting Edam Style Cheezly in the fridge…..so thought why not – let’s see if this sucker really does melt! Well hell yes it does!!! OMG!!!!! I am so happy! This stuff really does melt…will be fabulous for pizzas, etc…but it also has a great taste, subtle but with that smooth Edam like taste! I even tried a little not melted, nice….could have it on crackers or in a sandwich like that happily! A pack is $7.20

I waited a few days & took the Mature White Cheddar Style Cheezly ($7.20) with me up to my new home. We had a few friends over & since we are all over the place with moving at the moment we decided nibbles for dinner it was…well our friend Andrew was very surprised to find that this cheese was not in fact cheese at all…..he thought it was just rennet free but still dairy cheese…..so there you go – we fooled a non vego….& I have to say – this is up there with my thoughts on the Booja-Booja truffles…..this is the best by far vegan cheese I have ever eaten! It crumbles like a mature cheddar, it was great on crackers & exceptional in a sandwich with tomato chilli pickles……I absolutely love this one!!!!!! I will definitely be ordering this!!! This was my favourite product of the whole lot!!!!

Also available are: Super Melting Mozzarella Style Cheezly, Garlic & Herb Cheddar Style Cheezly – also for $7.20. This may seem a little pricey, but it is sooo worth it! I pay nearly $5 now for a vegan ‘cheese’, that is good but not as good as these ones & what a great selection to have a cheese & fruit platter for that special dinner party!

Yaoh Organic Hemp Seed Oil Lip Balm- Blueberry was my last goody to try out! I have been on the search for a decent vegan lip balm for a while now to no avail….well this one is good! The flavour is not overwhelming, the lips love it – and it is made from virgin olive oil, candelilla wax, organic hemp seed oil, comfrey, calendula, St. John’s wort, natural Vitamin E, rosemary extract & natural blueberry flavour. & at $5.95 is a complete bargain!
There is also Mango & Spearmint in the range!

So people get on their website & check it all out & order up – you will not be disappointed at all!!!!!

Review of Vegetarian Nirvana Café.

Relaxed and very casual are the first words that come to mind when ever I come here!

I came here the other night for a friends birthday dinner, we were early so we decided to sneak in a few entrees. Firstly we had the Onion Bhaji’s – very tasty indeed, these are onion fritters, spicy & fragrant with a good hint of cumin, very crunchy & left you wanting more! Served with a tamarind sauce (which is great) these are a bargain at $2.00 each. We also had some Roti Chanai, which is crispy Malaysian bread, way tasty too!!!!! These are also $2.00 per serve.

Once everyone else was there we ordered mains, I had the Eggplant Masala, which is diced eggplant cooked with potatoes and a special blend of fresh herbs and roasted spices. This was really tasty, I am a big fan of the eggplant & this did it justice. I also got some plain rice & papaddams for the whole experience!!! Plus we tried the mango chutney….now this was the best, I wish they’d sell this by the jar, I certainly would have taken some home! The Eggplant Masala is $9.50, a serve of rice is $2.00 for plain rice, 3 papaddams for $1.00 and $2.00 for the serve of mango chutney. I was the only vegan in the group so am only going to review my part in this…but for a really filling meal (plus I couldn’t eat it all & there was enough left over for lunch the next day) for under $20……bargain I say!
Most of the cuisine is suitable for vegans so that is a big plus & you are always greeted with a warm smile when you walk in the door.

So if you want some tasty basic Indian food in a casual relaxed environment or some good cheap take away, stop by Vegetarian Café Nirvana – 486 Bridge Road, Richmond – Ph : 9428 1408.
They are BYO and are open for dinner 7 nights a week and Thursday to Saturday 12-3pm for lunches. Pay them a visit & order the mango chutney!!!!!!

Review of De Lorenzo Products

Another nice parcel in the mail – yahhh full of lovely De Lorenzo goodies!

Well to start with I have been given the Moisture Balance Shampoo & Moisture Balance Intense Conditioner. These products are fantastic - they have made such a difference to my hair. My hair is very fine & a little bit lifeless at times.

Well…within a week, my hair feels like it has more volume & bounce, I love it! The shampoo is designed for normal to dry hair and this intense conditioner is for dry, damaged hair and you don’t need a lot of either product, so it’s great value for money!

Next I had the Instant Restructurant to try! Wow this is a winner…it took my hair from feeling limp & kinda dull to feel all ‘swooshy’ for more of a better word (sorry) but it made it feel like it had some life back in it again! This is good for all types of & you can use it as regularly as you’d like! It is a dual purpose leave in conditioner/ hair treatment and styling agent that restores brittle, damaged hair back to life. All you have to do is spray it onto wet hair after you have shampooed and conditioned!

This is one I would definitely recommend in conjunction with the shampoo & conditioner – my hair has never felt better!

Create Straight Straightening Balm was next to try. On my hair it worked a treat, kept it very straight & neat, you simply apply starting at the roots & smooth down through hair & blow dry brushing the hair straight! I also used this product on my partner’s daughter, she has way curly hair to the point of fizzing a little, well this product did straighten her hair down a bit but she still had a wave through it, not sure if we used enough & we will definitely try it again but the product worked much better on my straighter hair!

The Protein Complex spray was the last thing to try. This is a ‘hair rebuilder’ for damaged hair, coloured, etc. You simply shampoo, rinse, spray this in & leave for about 10 minutes, then condition as normal! I have only used this once so far & my partner’s daughter also tried this & it made her hair far less frizzy and my hair is looking great at the moment so I am sure it’s helped! & hers looked fantastic too!

These products are all natural, reasonably priced and from my experience here are wonderful products, I am definitely going to continue to use these products as I just can’t go back to what I was using previously now! So ask your hairdresser to start stocking them or contact De Lorenzo for where you can buy these goodies & much, much more!

Telephone: 1800 800 347 or email: info@delorenzo.com.au
Check out their website for all their other amazing products: www.delorenzo.com.au

Treat yourself & try these wonderful products & you will really feel & see the difference they make!
