Apples and Oranges
In 1911 over 20,000 women marched along the streets of Lawrence Massachusetts , protesting wage cuts. Among the marchers was a women carrying the slogan “We want bread and roses too”. Bread and Roses was to become the rallying cry of the women's movement, as important as bread is to our well being so too are roses.
All social movements need a cultural dimension that reaches out to others whilst as the some time touches our innermost soul in a way that is hard to define, it is a spiritual element recognised only when experienced. The cultural dimension helps take the pressure off, it allows us to become aware of the multifaceted nature of the movement and the larger society in which we work.
Bob Pyle is an American folk singer who has long realised the importance of song in the liberation struggle, his CD Apples and Oranges is supported by the Vegetarian Resource Group (VGR) it is a joyful example of American folk music
Bob Pyle ploughs the rich pastures; his lyrics are both cutting and happy, of the factory farm he sings.
So I didn't support a factory farm.
And every once in a while
I think about the cries that go unheard
On a farm that's factory style
Nowadays its factory style
The Golden Arches come in for much needed criticism
When they close the golden arches cling clang
And they've rung up their last purchase cling clang
There'll be shouts, parades and marches no more greasy fat and starches
When they close the golden arches with a bang.
He sings of Gentle Creatures.
Look high look low, come to me, Gentle Creatures come to me.
We even mages to turn a ‘love song' to seaweed into a metaphor
Seaweed, oh seaweed why do they call you names
If they misunderstand you you're really not to blame
So put your best fin forward and stand proud and tall
Cause seaweed, oh seaweed you're not a weed at all.
